Penny {Chocolate Lab} - ADOPTED

Penny might look like a 4 month old chocolate lab puppy... but really she is an alligator in disguise!

Just joking!  :) She just has those typical sharp puppy teeth that you tend to forget your own dogs ever had.

She is your typical puppy... Go, Go, Go when there is something fun and interesting going on, but nice and calm once she has gotten all her puppy exuberance out of her system.

She loves to munch on toys (or you if given the chance!) and will sit contentedly by herself munching on a good bone or toy.

She is still working on her house training and is very good as long as you are paying attention to her needs.

She sleeps well in her crate at night and doesn't make a peep.

When she wakes up in the morning, you have to be ready, as she is ready to Go, Go, Go again!

Penny is a typical puppy that is full of exuberance and joy.  She'll be a great addition to almost any family.

For more information on Penny, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Sammie {Happy Ending}

Sammie has defiantly felt right at home here from the moment she walked through the door. She has a lot of loving siblings whom she loves to cuddle and play with all the time. She loves going for strolls with my other dog Goldie who is also a bit older and enjoys just relaxing on the couch.

She especially has fallen in love with our one cat.

She has become my shadow and besides following me wherever I go, she always has to sleep by my side. I have defiantly noticed a change in her mood since we first got her, she is more energetic, happy and no longer timid. All in all she is a very happy and healthy dog, who finally found a good loving home.

Roxee {Happy Ending}

At first it started with just being a foster home. We got our first foster dog Roxee. I think I fell in love the first day at home. When it came to giving her up we couldn't do it. We adopted her and couldn't be happier. She has adjusted great with us. Everyone we meet thinks she is just the cutest and we couldn't agree more. Since being on a diet she has lost some weight and is really active, loves going for walks and going to the park to play fetch.

We still have trouble understanding why someone would give up such a great dog but we are glad none the less. We took her camping with us for the first time and she had so much fun running and jumping through the forest.
She's been doing great with our new foster dog Missy. She has a little trouble keeping up with Missy when we go to the park to play fetch, but that doesn't stop her from trying to steal the ball.

Everybody Loves Friday! - ADOPTED

Friday is a 12 week old mutt. She has a little bit of everything in her. Her mom was a Corgi cross, and her dad was a Border Collie/Lab cross. We aren't sure at this point how big Miss Friday is going to be but she won't be a large dog for sure. We are guessing she will be a medium sized (40lb) dog when full grown.
It's hard to believe at such a young age she is already looking for a new home. Her first family didn't realise how much work and training a little puppy takes. She's been with her foster mom for a few days now and has really settled in quick. She is very smart and is like a little sponge- learning everything she can at an amazing rate. She can sit, down, and shake a paw already! She's doing great with her crate training and rarely makes a peep. She sleeps through the night with no fuss, and is happy to run to her crate for meals.
She is a bit behind on her vaccination schedule so she hasn't been out on a leash much but her foster mom has been practicing in the yard and she said Friday is doing really well. Housetraining is coming along although there are still a few accidents now and then. She is learning though and for the first time ran to the door on her own yesterday. What a good puppy!

Friday loves everyone she meets and is just a very well adjusted little dog. Nothing phases her and she is happy to meet dog, cat, or person- all with the exuberant wag of her tail. She is a very happy little dog. As with all puppies she has a fair amount of energy but has already learned how to play fetch. She loves to play with other dogs, and will tug and fetch for as long as you will. Friday is learning to be calm in the house though, and saves most of her energy for outside play. She really is a good little pup who tries hard to do the right thing.
Friday is looking for a home where she will be spoiled and treated like a member of the family. She will need Puppy classes, and an owner who has time to spend teaching her how to be a good girl. Left to her own devices she could be a naughty one. :) She would be great with a family with older children, and would love the companionship of another dog or cat. If you think you might be right for this great puppy please contact us.

For more information on this dog, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at mailto:info@windycityrescue.comor by calling 403-359-3139.

Fostering

The heart and soul of every dog rescue is their foster homes.  Without foster homes, we wouldn't be able to help any dogs.  It can be one of the hardest jobs but also one of the most rewarding.

If you decide to be a foster home, you'll be able to get to know some incredible dogs.  They'll brighten your day, get you out exercising more and provide you with lots of cuddles in the evenings.  We aren't going to lie - it won't be all fun and games. There may be some house training accidents, there might be some whining on their first few nights in a crate and they may not walk all that politely on a leash when you first bring them home.

Despite these potential issues (and more), you'll be hard pressed not to fall in love.  Which makes the hardest part of the job saying goodbye to them when they get adopted.  It is amazing how quickly you can get attached. As cheesy as this sounds, even knowing these dogs for a few days will enhance your life and their impact will stay with you for years to come.

If you are interested in fostering for the Windy City Canine Rescue please let us know.  We have some dogs waiting to join us, but we need foster homes to care for them.  If you are interested in fostering an adult lab, or a lab pup (or any other dog), please let us know (email: info@windycityrescue.com or call: 403-359-3139).

We promise it will be an adventure!

Millie {Happy Ending}

From the very first time I saw Millie's picture on your blog, I knew she belonged with us. That sad little face needed a home that could give her all the love she deserved in her remaining years.

Since Millie has been with us, she has gained weight (amazing what consistant meals and chicken treats will do!) and loves to play outside with her "sister" Muffy, play with her favorite tennis ball and go for slow walks around the neighbourhood!

Millie really enjoyed reuniting with everyone at the Bark In The Park event. She is such an amazing old girl that loves everyone and everything and we would definately be lost without her now that she has touched our lives.

The Boys Are Back in Town - ADOPTED

We do our best to match our dogs with their forever homes, it's not a perfect science but I like to think that we are pretty darn good at it. Unfortunately sometimes people change their minds, or things come up and it is in our contract that if you adopt a dog from us in an event like this you must return them to Windy City Rescue.

Cooper and Tater are the sweetest dogs I have met in a long time. They have been through a few moves now and are understandably stressed by all the changes, but their foster home is working to make them the happy confident dogs that they are.

These boys would fit in with most households, they are active but not hyper, snugly but not clingy, they love people of all shapes and sizes, other dogs, and even cats. They love walks, and will sometimes play with toys. Cooper is a bit more playful, but doesn't have the whole fetch part down yet. Their favorite activity is snuggling with their foster humans and each other.

As with all of our dogs, we will only accept serious inquires on these boys as they have been through several changes in the last month. We also will not separate them. If I didn't have 3 dogs already, I wouldn't be writing this at all. These boys deserve a loving forever home and they won't disappoint.

Happy and Handsome - ADOPTED

Rhett has been been doing great.  His foster home has been  working on his leash skills and after about the first 10 minutes of the walk he settles down and is really good. Then it seems like the next time he goes, he forgets everything he learned the day before and has to learn everything again! We're sure he'll figure it out soon, he is a pretty smart guy. He just gets sooooo excited to go for a walk.

His foster home has been leaving him alone in the house for up to 6 hours and he has been great.  He just curls up on the couch and waits for them to come home again.  He's really easy to have around but he does "request" to go for walks, which is a good motivator for the foster home to go out there and get their exercise too!

For more information on Rhett, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

The Great Outdoors - ADOPTED

Missy had a lot of fun this past week camping with her foster mom.

She LOVED the water and would even fetch rocks and sticks from the bottom of the river!

She spent the majority of the weekend running free off leash and did great!

She managed to survive all the miniature birds mosquitos flying around.

And was completely exhausted after a weekend of nothing but fun!

Missy is a super fun dog, that is looking for her perfect match.  If you think that is you, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Calvin {Border Collie} - ADOPTED

Calvin wants you to know he is still looking for his perfect match! His foster home has learned a bit more about him and reports that he is a very sweet dog who is trying very hard to get use to being a part of a family after being in a shelter. He can get spooked and tries to hide from scary noises, but they are working to build his confidence with walks, and exposure to all things we take for granted every day. He learns very quickly and shows off his tricks proudly. Off leash he is excellent and he never pulls on leash. He hasn't met a person or dog he hasn't loved and desperately wants to do right, and be loved back. This boy is so sweet who deserves a loving, tender home.

For more information on Calvin, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at mailto:info@windycityrescue.comor by calling 403-359-3139.

Bark in the Park - Success!

Did you make it out to Bark in the Park?  If you didn't, you missed out on a lot of fun.

There were burgers, demos, raffle prizes and lots and lots of dogs.

All the dogs available for adoption were there and they met lots of people, and melted more than a few hearts.

We still need to work out exactly how much we fundraised during the event, but we aren't quite done yet. You may have noticed Wendy wandering around with a camera... She was taking pictures of the dogs, and you can buy the digital file with 100% of the proceeds going back to the rescue.  You can see the pictures here.  She didn't get EVERY dog that showed up - there were too many - but if you are lucky, there might be one (or two) there of your pup.

Thank you to EVERYONE who helped out.

Everything ran as smoothly as it did thanks to all the volunteers, all the demo dogs, all the foster homes, all the businesses that showed their support, all the media that helped spread the word, and of course, all of you who came out to eat a burger, buy a raffle ticket, and hang out with friends.  I have a feeling there will be a Bark in the Park II some time in our future.

Kassi {Golden Retriever} - ADOPTED

Kassi is a sweet, 4 year old golden retriever that was recently owner surrendered because her owner was moving and couldn't take her with him.

Kassi is friendly, playful and fairly high energy.

She loves to cuddle and will often gently jump up to make sure she maximizes her cuddle time.  :)

Kassi quickly bonded with the "man in the house" at her foster home and will do almost anything to please him.

Kassi is looking forward to the Bark in the Park tomorrow at Henderson Lake and hopes to see you all there!  She'll be there ready to give hugs and kisses to everyone who wants one (and maybe even to those who don't!).

For more information on Kassi, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.
