Bark in the Park

We all had a great time at Bark in the Park today!  We got to meet and talk with lots of people and most importantly so did the rescue pups!

Bo, Piper, Ellie and Finn were all on hand to do give out kisses and tail wags.

There were tonnes of fun demos to watch and great contests to enter.

There were lots of great dogs to visit with.  Some came dressed for the party, others met up with old friends.

And there were some familiar faces from the past too!

We managed to fundraise almost $1,000 today!!  Thanks to M&M Meats for doing the BBQ, Park Pet, NOKA, Pet Parade, Paws on the Run and Tail Blazers for coming to provide great information and a fun shopping experience.  Thanks to everyone who donated something for the raffle table!!  There were a tonne of great prizes and there were lots of people walking away happy that they had won.  We'll have a list of all the great companies that donated prizes posted soon.  The list is so long, we need to double check it so we don't forget anyone!  We really appreciate the support we receive from the community.  We couldn't help as many dogs as we do without it.

And last but not least, thanks to everyone who came out today to support the rescue.  We hope you had as good a time as we did!  We'll see you next year for Bark in the Park 3.

Water Hound - ADOPTED

To say that Marley likes the hose, is a bit of an understatement.

Marley will literally spend hours playing with the sprinkler.

It actually works out pretty good - water your lawn AND exercise your dog!  You get two for the price of one.

For more information on Marley, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Bo {Terrier Cross} - ADOPTED

Bo is a medium sized, terrier cross who is about 50 lbs. He has been loved his whole life but sadly, his mom has a terminal illness and can no longer care for him.

Bo is loves people, kids, dogs and other cats. His only bad habit is jumping up when he greets you.

Bo loves to play and can easily be enticed into a game of keep away, tug, or wrestling. But he also loves to cuddle. Once you settle in for the evening on the couch, he is right there with you - sweet, mellow and loving.

Bo is great off leash and will turn on a dime when you call his name even when other people or dogs are around.

Bo is an active dog and will require an active family, couple or person who is willing to provide him with daily on or off leash walks.

For more information on Bo, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

The Indoor Policy

We often receive inquiries about adopting a rescue to be kept as an outdoor dog. One of our adoption policies is that we do not adopt dogs out that will be kept mainly outdoors. Now having said that there are always exceptions to every rule. If we happen to get a dog into our program that was an outside dog since a puppy and we match them with this type of home there is that possibility. There are still requirements we have in order to place the dog in that home (proper shelter from the elements, adequate food and water, ect.).

People often ask why we have this policy in place so we would like to explain our reasons.

All dogs in our program are placed into foster homes until they are adopted. The dogs then have a head start on house training, crate training and socialization with other animals and people. The foster homes put a lot of their time and effort into their foster dogs in hopes that it will make the transition to their new home easier. If a dog is adopted to an outside home then all the time and effort a family has put into this training has been a wasted effort, and the lifestyle that the dog was adjusting to is taken away. We want all of our dogs to have the opportunity of being a part of the family.

By no means are we saying that people who only have outside dogs are wrong, it is just not in our policies to adopt out to these homes. Imagine being a cute little 8 week old puppy who has lived in the cozy house with your furry brother and sisters only to be taken to your new home and left alone outside, or one of the many strays we take in that have gone from the cold to the comforts of living in a warm home with a family only to be sent back outside.

If you read our blog and respect what we do, you will understand that we put a lot of time, effort, love, and training into each and every one of the dogs that comes into our system. We take them from bad situations where maybe they would never be considered 'one of the family', and we make sure they will become one. All our dogs, we are proud to say, go through basic command training, house training, crate training, and leash training. They are on their way to being well mannered, welcomed members of a household.
