Calvin {Border Collie} - adopted

Calvin has only been with us for a few days but his foster home describes him as the "perfect little gentleman".  This is what else they had to say...

Calvin is such a mellow, calm, happy Border Collie!  He is great around all people, including toddlers and babies, and loves dogs too. He is very smart, and already answers to his new name, and comes immediately when called.
He is fantastic on and off leash, trying to stay as close as possible to you while walking.  I took him for a run, too, and he was a great partner.  He is very respectful and so quiet!  He barked once at a bird, and other than that, I have not heard him make a sound!  He is very sensitive when you tell him no, or when you raise your voice (even calling our dog's name in the coulees upset him!).

He is unfazed by new things, like lawn mowers, and vacuums. He would be very happy to sleep on the floor next to his owner, and has never tried to jump up on the bed or the couch.  His ideal home would be one where he could be his owner's shadow - he definitely wants to be wherever people are.

Cal deserves a home with people who will love him as much as he loves them, and maybe a doggie friend that will play with him.  He just wants to make people happy, and has been waiting so long for his forever home!"

For more information on Calvin, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Rhett {German Shepherd/Doberman Pincher} - ADOPTED

Rhett is such a love.  He is super snuggly and super affectionate.  I think every volunteer that has met him, was instantly in love -  I know I was.

Rhett was at the Brooks Animal Shelter for quite a while and was really feeling the need to stretch those long legs of his so he has come to Windy City to stay in a foster home. And speaking of those long legs... they are in great shape, but I don't think I'd describe him as graceful.  :)

He has great dog skills and is pretty laid back around them so other dogs seem to accept him almost instantly.

He loves to play catch, but can't quite figure out the concept of bringing the toy back. So once you throw it, YOU have to go get it to throw it again but he'll love you all the more for it.

The volunteers and staff in Brooks have done a great job teaching him basic commands including sit, down and come as well as teaching him pretty good manners.  He will get excited and forget himself and jump on you, but with a gentle "off" he remembers that he is supposed to keep 4 feet on the floor.

He is a very sweet dog and if you don't mind his size (he is quite tall!), he would be a welcome addition into almost any home.

For more information on Rhett, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Our Goal

Whenever we adopt out a dog, we have a single goal - to place the right dog, with the right family.  And we made a perfect match for Max.  I ran into Max today at the dog park and as you can see, things are going "just fine".

As cheesy as it sounds, we are always thrilled to see dogs find their "happily ever after".

A Second Look - ADOPTED

Missy has changed SO much in the few months she has been with us.

Her dog skills have improved tremendously.  She used to bark and lunge at every dog she saw but now she can now sit quietly and let them pass by.  Her foster home has a few other dogs and she co-exists with them without issue.

If she meets a dog-savvy cat that just ignores dogs or acts calmly around them, she just ignores them right back.

What hasn't changed is how much fun she is!

Missy will keep you laughing and in awe of her athletic ability.

She is an active dog, but not a hyper dog that can't sit still.  Her foster mom has nothing but good things to say about her.  She is quiet in the house, is house-trained and has very good manners.

If you are looking for a fun, active dog to spend your time with, Missy may just be the perfect dog for you.

For more information on Missy, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Joined at the Hip - ADOPTED

Here is some information from Cooper and Tater's foster home after their first week.
Cooper and Tater have been nicknamed the shadows at our house because they are always going wherever you go (especially Cooper). At first they did not want to use the stairs (and we have a 4 level split) so they were forced to get used to them, now they run up and down them all with no problems.

The boys sleep in their kennel at night and you don’t even know that they are there after a few minutes of whining. They would looove to sleep on the bed so as a treat in the morning they get to go on the bed and they are sooo happy.
They also have no problems being left out alone in the house during the day. I really hope someone takes them together, they are rarely ever 2 feet apart in the house, I think they would be heartbroken to be separated. They are really no work at all. I’m starting to get attached! All in all they are very nice dogs that are a breeze to take care of, all they ask for is love and lots of it!
For more information on Cooper and Tater, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Adoption Fair

One of the drawbacks to rescue is that the dogs are not all in one place where people can come and meet their favorites all at once.  With rescue, you generally decide which dog you are interested in based on the information on the blog or website, as well as from the answers you've received from all the questions you'll have asked the Adoptions Coordinators. Then you arrange to meet that particular dog.  And yes, you are more than welcome to do this for more than one dog, it just isn't something that you can usually do all in one day as we need to coordinate around foster homes schedules and lives.

This is often not an issue if you know exactly what you are looking for, but if you are a little uncertain some times it is just nice to meet all the dogs and get a better feel for their personality, how they interact with you and how you think they'll fit into your lifestyle.  Sometimes you just need to feel the chemistry to know which dog is right for you.  Often you won't know what you are looking for, until you meet them.

So that is why there are things like Adoption Fairs!  The Prairie Dog Canine Rescue is hosting an adoption fair this Saturday (June 19) and has invited several rescues (including Windy City Canine Rescue) to participate.  So here is your chance to meet all the dogs you've been kind of wondering about.  Is Farrah as playful as she looks, is Missy as sassy as she appears and is Parker really friendly enough to lick you to death?  Come find out!

When:  Saturday, June 19
Time: 10-4
Where: Storage Town - 3732 6 Ave B

Tater and Cooper {Miniature Dachshunds} - ADOPTED

Tater and Cooper are 3 year old littermates.  They've never been apart and we'd like to keep them that way if possible!

This one is Tater...

And this one is Cooper....

They are both housetrained, good with cats, good with kids and generally quiet around the house.

The love to go for walks and while they haven't socialized with a lot of dogs in the past, they are friendly and interested in dogs on their walks.

They can appear shy when you first meet them, but if you sit on the ground or crouch down, they instantly make themselves comfortable on your lap or under your legs.  They are very sweet boys that would make great companions.

For more information on Tater and Cooper, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Parker {Golden Retriever} - ADOPTED

There is LOTS of Parker to love and he has lots of love to give back.

Parker is a 2 year old Golden Retriever who is typical of his breed.  Loves people, loves other dogs, loves cats, loves kids, loves cuddles and loves to play.  He is a very happy boy, who is so content with life, that all the recent changes in his life hasn't fazed him one bit.

He might be a little more fazed by his new diet.  Parker has a few pounds to lose.  But hey, don't we all?!  Once Parker gets down to a healthier weight, he'll still be a big boy - he is an inch or two taller than his foster home's goldens.

If you are wondering if Parker got into an unfortunately accident with a weed-eater, rest assured he did not.  :)  Poor Parker had a whole bunch of mats on his back that were too painful to brush out, so instead of shaving him to look like a lab, we just took off his mats.  In a few weeks, he'll be looking as good as new.  Or at least a little less patchy!

If you are looking for a large, loveable dog, look no farther.  Parker would make a fabulous family pet.

For more information on Parker, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Ozzie {Australian Shepherd} - ADOPTED

Do you need a hug?
How about a kiss?
Ozzie is a super sweet Australian Shepherd who just wants to be loved. He is friendly, affectionate, quiet and loves to go for runs.
Ozzie will need to go for regular walks or runs. He grew up on a farm and had never been on a leash until a few weeks ago, but you never would have guessed. He is super smart and even more eager to please. He just wants to make you happy. We dare you to meet him and NOT fall in love.
Ozzie thinks he is a lap dog and wants nothing more than to be with you. He will quietly stay by your side while you work or play. He is good around other dogs and cats, but is unsure how to play with toys yet. He is a great dog that will make someone very happy.
He isn't actually as shy as he appears in these photos... he just wasn't a fan of the big scary camera.

For more information on Ozzie, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Sing Along - ADOPTED

Is it just me, or does everyone else break into song when they think of Lola?  And speaking of Lola....

Lola is doing GREAT.  She has struggled a bit with house training because of all the changes she's gone through but she is definitely getting the hang of it now that she has had some consistency.  She is great in a crate and will sleep in it at night (or of course, snuggle on bed if you let her) and during the day when her foster home is out.

She loves to play with toys and doesn't play so rough that she destroys them.  Which is definitely nice!  She is a good tugger and likes to fetch too.

As playful as Lola is, we still think her favourite activity is cuddling. She is a complete cuddle bug and will hop on your lap whenever you settle in front of the TV for the evening.

For more information on Lola, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.
