Ellie {Shepherd Cross}

Ellie is a lab/shepherd cross (we think!) and is around 6 years old.  She spent the last 2 months at the Lethbridge Animal Shelter but is now lapping up the love in a foster home.  Our understanding is that she was found on a farm by Calgary with 3 other dogs.  Two of those dogs starved to death but Ellie was rescued in time by the ASPCA.  One other dog (probably her son) also survived and has since been adopted.

Ellie is very sweet and loves to snuggle. She shows her appreciation of your attentions by leaning up against you as you pet her.  Her gentle nature will touch your heart within minutes of meeting her.

You can tell just from looking at her she has had a bit of a rough life.  She has scars on her face and body and her eyes have some funny colouring (probably from malnutrition).  Our vet does not believe that this colouring has affected her vision.  She is not producing tears in her one eye and is on medication to fix that and it is working well. It is possible that once Ellie is fully healthy, her tear production will come back to normal, but we don't know that for sure yet. Ellie also has hypothyroidism which has caused a decrease in her energy levels and has made her coat brittle. After only 5 days of medication we've already seen an improvement.  She will need to remain on the thyroid medications for the rest of her life but the costs are (thankfully) minimal at around $30 per month.  With these medications Ellie will be able to live a long and healthy life.

Ellie is OK with other dogs but she likes to be in control and probably would not enjoy a younger pesky puppy as a sibling.  If she had the chance to describe her ideal home it would probably involve big cushy beds, a warm fireplace and a nice lap to snuggle next to.  She loves to go out on walks, but she doesn't need much to satisfy her.

Our adoption fee allows us to provide the basics for the dogs in our care, but we are always encountering additional expenses (dental work, medicine for illnesses, etc.).  If you would like to help dogs like this one, but aren't looking to adopt one at this time, please consider a donation.  Thank you.
