Suzie Update - ADOPTED

This is what Suzie's Foster Mom has to say about her....
Suzie is really just the cutest thing. She's smaller than the pictures make her look. She's a super happy and playful little thing, tearing around the house all the time right on my heels. She's a food fiend for sure, but not possessive of it. She's so, so cuddly. Loves to be on your lap and tries to cozy up as close as she can. She sleeps awesome through the night in her kennel. If she's kennelled and you go out of her sight, she makes these funny squawking noises - like a parrot.  :)  But overall she's pretty quiet. She's had some bouts of play with my dog and they play great together. She likes to swing her body around and butt-check him in the face.   They are keeping themselves busy by sneakily trying to steal things away from each other, but they're being super respectful and it hasn't caused any problems. We went for a big walk with some doggie friends the other day and she was good meeting everyone. She's a sissy so I carried her most of the way (she didn't want to step in puddles).

For more information on Suzie, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Suzie {Chihuahua} - ADOPTED

How cute is little Suzie?

Suzie is a 3-5 year old Chihuahua that was found in the County of Lethbridge.  When no one came to claim her, she was turned over to us to help her find a new home.

Suzie is a sweet little dog who is very affectionate and loves to snuggle - once she gets to know you.  She is usually pretty unsure of new people and can be a little snappy if you approach her too quickly.  With a little patience (and food - food is definitely the way to this little girl's heart), she will learn to trust you.

Suzie does great with other dogs, however she does like to be the boss.  She doesn't know she only weighs a few pounds!

Suzie is also great with adults and older kids, but is not too sure of younger kids at this point.  She is also good with cats and is 90% housetrained. She loves to snuggle on the couch, enjoys going for walks and is even great off leash.  She listens well, is very smart and is quick at learning new things.  She is also fantastic in her kennel and settles in comfortably.

If you'd like a companion to hang out on your lap while you watch TV, but also keep up with you when you are on the move, Suzie just may be the girl for you.

For more information on Suzie, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Getting to Know Them - Adopted

It is almost impossible for you to get to know a dog through just words and pictures.  We try our best to let you know the good, the bad, the wonderful and the ugly but you really won't know how you are going to click, until you actually meet the dog.

I tend to meet the dogs for about 15 minutes while I take pictures and I rely on that brief time, along with lots of input from the foster homes, for the information that I pass on to all of you through the blog and website.  But it isn't the same as spending quality time together.

I'm looking after Lily this weekend. I'm not sure if she's come a really long way since I last met her a few weeks ago, if I didn't get a good grasp of her personality when I met with her, or a combination of the two.  While I thought she was a great dog and a fun dog when I met her, I think she is even more wonderful now that I've spent more time with her.

She is AMAZING in the house.  She is calm, snuggly and affectionate.  She likes to be near you and will occasionally be a little pushy (i.e. nudges you) for attention, but for the most part she either chews quietly on a bone, or entertains herself with a toy.  (She is always ready for a game of fetch though.) She makes it almost impossible to tie up your shoes as all she wants to do is give you kisses as you lean over.  She listens well, is respectful of all the other animals in the house (including the cat) and doesn't bark much (if at all!).

We took her on an off leash walk this morning. Wow! Can this girl run.  She was flying out there but she didn't once worry me that we had taken her off leash.  She came when we called - even when there was another dog and person around.

She had a tonne of fun playing fetch.  She ran out as fast as she could and came running back almost as fast, so that you could throw it again.  The cold didn't bother her, because she was too busy moving around.

Now that we are back in the house, she is calm, quiet and content.  She hasn't been bothered by noises and she hasn't acted weird or shy around my husband and I.  In short, she has been a really well adjusted dog.  I never would have guessed that less than a month ago, this girl didn't know what to do with herself inside a house. Dog's are amazing at adapting.

If you'd like to get to know Lily a little better, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Updates

We just have a few updates to share.  All the dogs in our care are doing great.  Even April will be doing fine soon - thanks to some incredibly, generous people!

April - Adoption Pending
Thank you, thank you, thank you. We can't say it enough.  Thanks to the very generous donations of many people, we have enough money to cover April's veterinary expenses!  She is doing well on her new diet plan and we hope to have her dental work done in the next little while.  Please keep your fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly for her.

Charlie
Charlie is doing great!  He is super cuddly and very well behaved around the house. He has been enjoying the good life with two walks a day is just an all around awesome dog.

Mya - ADOPTED
Mya is doing really well.  She has been out skijoring quite a bit with her foster mom. She is listening really well when off leash and comes when called.  She is doing better with other dogs and great with older kids.  She even went to work pulling a 9 yr old child around on a sled up and down the hills.  I wish my dogs would do that!

Mya has even participated in a race.  The race was 4 miles and Mya did awesome (they did it in 15 mins).  She handled the excitement of the race very well.  The dogs learn that when a leashed is hooked to their collar or gentle leader they are to walk nicely (no pulling) and when it is hooked to their harness they are allowed to pull.  Mya loves skijoring and running FAST. You can see a video of the race here - she is part of team #5 (look for the black dogs).  The dog running with her is her foster brother Epic.

Lily
Lily has really settled into her foster home and is getting quite used to the good life of living inside.  Especially in this weather!  She has proven that she is good with other dogs, good with cats and is really quite a sweet dog. She is doing well on the leash, in the crate, and is completely housetrained.  She has met quite a few new dogs & was great with them. Still can still be a little shy initially with some people but if the person is confident she, she picks up on their reassurance and trusts them.

Piper
Piper is doing great!  She really is just a big goofy girl.  Her leash walking is improving but she still needs a little work so that she doesn't pull on leash.  Nothing that a walking aide like an Easy Walk Harness, or Halti wouldn't fix!

She loves to learn and be busy, but is also learning how to just relax at home. She loves to play ball or frisbee although we hesitate to call it fetch as she is great at chasing down the toy, she just doesn't always bring it back to you!  LOL.  She is great with everyone she meets and is particularly fantastic with kids.  She really just needs someone to notice her and give her the home she deserves.

For more information on any of these dogs, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

April Needs Your Help - ADOPTION PENDING

We hate to ask, but we need your help.  April, the sweet little dachshund in our care, is in need of some serious veterinary care.

She has an ear infection (easily solved with some antibiotics), needs some dental work AND has a class 4 heart murmur.  And to add to all of that, she needs to lose some weight in order to make her heart strong enough to withstand the anesthetic she'll need to get some teeth pulled.

We've been working on her weight since she has arrived and is already down 2 pounds but she still has a long way to go.  We've taken her off "regular" diet food and on to a food recommended by her vet in hopes that we can speed the process up even further.

Regardless, the estimate for her upcoming veterinary needs is over $1000.

Our adoption fee is $300 and for most dogs, this covers everything they need - from their spay/neuter, to vaccinations and deworming to food and other miscellaneous supplies.  We may even have a little left over sometimes (usually when a dog is spayed or neutered before they come to us) which goes into the bank to cover extra expenses that occasionally pop up such as medicine for ear infections, treatment for minor wounds that some dogs come in with, volunteer transportation costs, etc.

We also do some fundraising throughout the year. Last year's Bark in the Park was a lot of fun and raised money for the dogs in our care.  We also get donations from individuals and businesses throughout the year as well.  Park Pet Hospital provides not only wonderful care for all our dogs, but they also give us a generous discount.  All combined, this is generally enough to keep us financially healthy.

We only take a limited number of dogs at a time to make sure we can cover all their expenses,  but occasionally we get the odd curve ball thrown our way that we aren't prepared for.  And this is what has happened in April's case.

We know you are probably still feeling the pinch of Christmas bills, but even if you only have $5 to spare, April could sure use it.

There are 3 ways you can donate:

  1. Click the Donate button at the bottom of this post to donate securely through PayPal
  2. Call (403-328-0028) or visit (142 Columbia Blvd W) Park Pet Hospital and ask to put money down on our account.
  3. Mail a cheque to: Windy City Rescue  P.O. Box 341, Coalhurst, AB  T0L 0V0
April, the volunteers with Windy City Rescue, and all of the dogs in our care, THANK YOU for considering a donation.

Chip {Dachshund Cross} - ADOPTED

It doesn't get any cuter than Chip!

Chip is an 8 month old Dachshund Cross who was originally thought to be a purebred and had been purchased for breeding.  When his owners realized he wasn't a purebred, they dropped him off at the Taber Shelter where he sat... for a month!  I can't believe he was there that long because this little fellow won my heart instantly.

He is fun, playful, good with dogs, good with cats, loves all people, is super confident and has just the right amount of sass (at least in my opinion!).

AND he is already housetrained!

If you are looking for fun, active, small dog, look no further. And be sure to act fast!

With looks and a personality like Chip's he isn't going to be with us long.

And just one more picture, incase you aren't already convinced.... :)

For more information on this dog, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Charlie {Black Lab Cross} - ADOPTED

Charlie is big and black, but please don't hold that against him.  He is also sweet...

sensitive...

and playful.

Charlie is around 4 years old and was found wandering the Highway near Taber.  The Taber shelter had him for a little while, but no one came in to claim him.  He has obviously been well loved at one time as he is friendly and knows some obedience.

He is housetrained and is good with other dogs, adults, kids and cats. He likes to snuggle and relax at home but is also ready to go when you are.  He would make a great addition to almost any family.

For more information on Charlie, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.

Linc {Yorkshire Terrier} - ADOPTED

Linc is an adorable 9 month old Yorkshire Terrier that was surrendered by his owner as he was a little more active than she had anticipated.

He has never met a dog, cat or person he hasn't liked, although not all the cats he's met are as willing as he is to cast aside the species barrier and play!

And play is what this boy likes to do.  He is a very busy, very active dog in a very small package.  Don't let his size fool you, he can keep up with the best of them.

Linc is housetrained, although still has the odd accident if you aren't paying attention.  He is very much a puppy and if left to his own devices, he has been known to get into mischief.

Linc is looking for an active home that is prepared for his puppy antics.  Families with kids of any age, or someone who wants a dog able to keep up with an active lifestyle would be the perfect match for this little firecracker.

For more information on Linc, please contact the Windy City Canine Rescue at info@windycityrescue.com or by calling 403-359-3139.
